Keep on growing

Many people thinking of downsizing worry about whether they can take their pets to their new home. But a recent study shows that a large number of downsizers are just as concerned about outdoor space and having their own garden.
The research by Riverstone, an upmarket developer of retirement properties for the over 65s, showed that retirees take an average of three-and-a-half years from starting to think about downsizing to taking the plunge. One in four people said they had stalled because of having to leave a much-loved garden.
Over half (57 per cent) said that gardening is one of their biggest and most therapeutic hobbies.
Luckily, Riverstone has terraces at all its properties, meaning you don’t have to give up on a favourite hobby. ‘Moving home later in life doesn’t have to mean you have to give up gardening. In fact, anything but!’ says Martin Earp, Riverstone’s chief executive.
‘To ensure close connections with a garden when you move we have experts on hand to offer support and new inspiration for private outdoor spaces.
‘The abundant herb gardens at Riverstone Kensington and Fulham have been curated by the renowned Jekka McVicar, and communal green spaces have been designed to be an extension of your home, ready for you to use on your own or with friends and family. Every Riverstone apartment comes with its own private balcony or terrace - the perfect spot to cultivate your own plants or herbs.’
Jekka McVicar, the organic gardening and herb expert, author, and broadcaster, and Riverstone’s gardening partner, agrees: ‘There’s a social side to gardening, and the great thing about Riverstone is that you can create a gardening club, compare notes and swap seeds.’
Riverstone’s research found that retirees go through a series of stages when contemplating a move in later life. They generally follow a pattern of denial, delay, acceptance, and finally positivity.
Fear of the unknown (23%) played a huge part in the decision-making process, while 22% actively stalled because of the mammoth task of de-cluttering. At least one in five baulked at having to prepare their house for sale.
Riverstone is for the less retiring, offering one, two or three-bedroom luxury apartments for sale in Kensington and Fulham, within a vibrant community, for residents aged over 65.
Both residences benefit from a wide range of five-star spaces including a cinema and spa, restaurant and bar, wellbeing support, a 24-hour concierge and much more. Riverstone also offers wider health support through its partner, The Good Care Group.
