The Stylist - Armand Beasley

An unusual ingredient has been popping up in all sorts of beauty products – it’s time you experienced the magic of mushrooms

Much more than just fodder for your stir-fry, mushrooms are making quite an impact in the wellness and beauty sector, whether for their incredible antiinflammatory properties or in relieving ‘brain fog’ or a flagging libido.

The humble mushroom has many species that all have different benefits depending on how you use them. They are powerful adaptogens, which means they help manage stress, anxiety, hormonal issues and fatigue.

There are now many ways in which you can get the benefit of mushrooms, from supplements using higher concentrations of medicinal mushrooms to teas and coffees, with brands like Mushrooms 4 Life and Dirtea leading the way. There have been many clinical studies with interesting results about mushrooms that are worthwhile perusing, but in the meantime take a look at these fabulous five fungi and their various benefits. Shiitake is the second most widely cultivated mushroom after the humble button varieties. Rich in vitamins B and D, shiitake also contains selenium, which can help combat acne.

Lion’s mane contains erinacine and hericenone, compounds that are antibacterial but also help to stimulate nerve growth factor, which may be beneficial for mild dementia, according to a clinical study, and menopause symptoms. It can also help to reduce anxiety and stress. Tremella, also called snow fungus, contains a natural form of hyaluronic acid.

One study showed that tremella offered even better moisture retention than products containing hyaluronic acid. Cordyceps is an incredible powerhouse, and could be the next natural SPF, as it mgives a natural photoprotective ability to the skin. It can also help with boosting energy metabolism.

Reishi was nicknamed the ‘mushroom of immortality’ and was revered by Chinese emperors for its versatility. Highly active immune modulating polysaccharides have numerous benefits, including anti-inflammatory and antihistamine properties. Reishi also helps to reduce pigmentation and discolouration of the skin through its ability to inhibit the melanin-producing enzyme tyrosinase.
