“The sun will rise again tomorrow”

Lindsay weighs in her thoughts on the recent US presidential election
If you're like me, you're probably already done with the recent news. Done with the strife, the emotions, the questions. However, creating these letters and deeming myself a young liaison between the two countries and cultures, I couldn't help but to form somewhat of a response to this week's turn of events.

I hope to not seem too ignorantly biased and am determined to remain sensitive to all viewpoints and backgrounds. I've observed family and friends from the States as well as listening to well informed classmates and peers in the UK. By doing so, I've concluded that this issue has far too many sides to dissect, but one thing is sure: a sense of fear spans the two nations and causes the millennial generation especially to question the wellbeing of their future. Messages from the political right of defense, exclusion, and sexism penetrated our screens for so long that it was impossible for viewers to avoid. As the young generation hoped for an evolved and inclusive world power, we denied that the messages of hate would stick and grow to the extent that it did. But here we are today with the events unfolded, and this is our new reality.

There is no perfect candidate and there are many reasons why one would shirk away from either side of the battle for victory. In my very personal opinion, it is quite a shame that the United States has revolved around only two 'sides', or two constricting boxes of beliefs for such a large country of diverse people.

Whatever the true reason(s) for Tuesday evening's result, the people have spoken.

The only message that I wish to portray as an American citizen is that I plead the world not to turn their backs and to not believe that every American represents the big message here. We are all in need of support, encouragement, empathy, and love.

In my meditation class (that I promptly attended Wednesday evening) we practice the art of Metta Bhavana which trains the mind to love yourself, love others, and to trust that everyone is seeking wellness and happiness. I believe that this kind of mental dwelling is what will get us through some very great changes, whether that be Brexit or President Trump. But even on top of this even, it is important to act. Mobilization of self, family, and community can make great changes for the better. Stand for what you believe in and stand strong with one another. Keep the image of a world that celebrates difference and is open to educated analysis.
