Coco's corner: 14 September

Dear Readers,

I am a modest dog, as you know. When people at dinner parties ask me what I do, I make a great effort to be humble. 'I write a column,' I answer, with a downcast look. Of course I would never, ever mention that I am, pro rata, the highest-paid columnist on Fleet Street by a long chalk, with a fatter fee than Littlejohn, Boris and Clarkson.

But it is not, I confess, every day that I star in New York's prestigious Vanity Fair magazine, the jewel in Conde Nast's crown. You see, they sent a famous photographer called Jocelyn Bain Hogg.

Everyone in the office pretended they hadn't made an effort that day, but, in fact, there were furious preparations behind the scenes in the editorial Ladies (and also in the Gents these days, of course) as staff got ready for their close-ups. I noticed the editor Matt had put on some even higher waisted powder-blue trousers than usual, and had trimmed his new designer stubble.

I think my pictures have turned out well. The editor in chief has a theory that I always look the same in photographs – but I don't. I can mix it up like Kate Moss!

I was relieved that Matt didn't produce Eric (you know, that cat) for the shoot. I may be modest, but I still like to be the star of the show. Till next week,
