Creating A 1920s Make-Up Look
During the 1920s, women enjoyed experimenting with all the new products suddenly available to them, so the iconic Flapper, with her short hair and even shorter skirts, completed her look with a full face of paint. If you are a flapper at heart, be sure to visit The Colonial Club over the festival for a night of music and cabaret hosted by the fabulous Dusty Limits.
Step 1 - Face
Start by applying a good coverage foundation, then dust this over with a translucent powder to give a matte finish. It's best to keep your base simple for an authentic 1920s look.
Step 2 - Brows
For the fashionable lady during this era, Flapper brows were worn pencil thin. Luckily you can easily create the illusion of this without resorting to plucking! Firstly brush the brows over with an eyebrow brush/wand to flatten them, then use a little eyebrow pomade to fill them in and darken them for a really dramatic look.
Step 3 - Eyes
Start with a neutral base colour and work this right up to the brow, then add a dark eye shadow in grey or black all over your eyelid and up to the socket. For a heavy look, line the eyes, top and bottom, with eyeliner pencil. Make sure you blend out the liner for a soft, smudgy look. Finish with a slick of mascara on both upper and lower lashes.
Tip
If using a kohl eye pencil for this look, make sure to warm it up on the back of your hand so it goes on smoothly and doesn't snag.
Step 4 – Cheeks
Blush (or 'rouge' as it was know in the 1920s,) should be applied to the apple of your cheeks. Add a dab of colour to the centre of the cheek and blend out with a soft brush. Cream blushers work really well for this.
Step 5 - Lips
Lip shape is very important for this look. The 1920s favoured a 'Cupid Bow' shape rather than a natural shape. Start by blanking out the lips with your foundation and then re-drawing the new shape with a lip-liner pencil. Once you have lined the lips (making sure you under-draw them,) fill them in with the same pencil. This will help the lipstick stay in place. Finish by applying your lipstick on top with a tapered lip brush. This will give you much greater precision during the application.
Tip
Top the look off with curled hair pinned up into a 'faux bob' for perfect 1920s's chic.
