Get the 1930s Look from ITV’s The Durrells
The dresses
While they don't get to dress up that often, as a pretty frock isn't all that practical when you are working on the land, when they do wear a dress, they are light and perfect for spring and summer. Margot wears typical late 1930s dresses; the early tea dress shape was worn from the latter half of the decade up until the end of the war. It is a flattering cut for all shapes with cute cap sleeves which hug the shoulders creating an elegant silhouette and the gathering under the bust makes the dress fall nicely over the body. For an authentic look that could be straight out of this drama, choose this ditsy flower print dress which is both pretty and vintage in style.

But let's not forget the landlady, Vasilia who is so much more glamorous getting to wear more stylish dresses, with hats worn on the side and beautiful leather clutch bags. Her frocks are more elegant than the classic tea dress; she wears silks, bold colours such as red, teamed up with dress clips. The 1930s fit was often bias cut, with fabric draping beautifully down the leg to mid calf length. Worn with heels rather than pumps, this dress with tie neckline is perfect for a night out.

The blouses
Louisa lives in a cotton or linen blouse worn with long skirts, mainly with an apron over the top. Margot also wears them, but hers are younger in style, more colourful and often sleeveless. What they both have in common are their pretty rounded collars. What we love about them is their versatility; they can be dressed up with wide leg trousers or dressed down like the women do in The Durrells.

The patterns
Margot loves a stripe and Louisa loves a fine polka dot – both popular designs in the late 1930s. These can be seen on dresses, aprons, blouses and head scarves, all adding to the slightly out of the ordinary, fun lifestyle that they are leading.
The accessories
Most of the time both Durrell women are wearing aprons and carrying large wicker baskets. They also, as do all the family, wear straw hats and sensible white pumps. There is something nostalgic about wearing a vintage apron, conjuring up images of our grandmas baking in days gone by. Find your own vintage aprons and baskets on sites such as Etsy or online.

The real WOW accessories are the hats and bags belonging to Vasilia. Made from lightweight textiles such as dyed raffia, the hats are always worn on the side. She is often holding leather tooled clutch bags but what we really love is her dress clips. These are brooch-like jewels with a clip on the back, so it can be pinned at the base of the V at the neckline. Designed in plain styles or covered in jewels, they are a sure way to add glamour to any dress.
