Add an opulent touch to your home with the latest in creative upholstery, says Hugh St Clair
Much of the latest upholstery is tailored and fitted with interesting details, such as visible stitching and fancy buttons. The feel is 1950s, a period currently in vogue.

Aiveen Daly is a creative upholsterer who sumptuously embellishes chairs and sofas with pleated silk sunburst, bows, antique buttons and leather lacing. For one of London’s swankiest apartments, furnished by the Candy Brothers, she has used metallic silver stitching.

Hannah Stanton, based in Hackney, London, transforms junk-shop finds with gold buttoning and fabulous trims. A Victorian chair was made shapelier with extra stuffing. Its front is covered in woven blue Merrington cotton fabric, from Sanderson’s new collection – while the back is finished in cream silk.

For those who can’t get to a chichi upholsterer, Hannah Stanton’s comprehensive book, Contemporary Upholstery (Jacqui Small, £20), offers ‘techniques and inspiration for upstyling your furniture’. The book also tells you the right type of fabric to use for different purposes.

Family firm Plumbs – 01772-901525, www.plumbs.co.uk/lady – offers a reupholstery service using fabrics from a bank of more than 600 designs and colours, while Brighton-based company Relovestuff – 07818- 472833, www.relovestuff.co.uk – uses interesting materials in a creative way. For a children’s room, the furniture was upholstered with a patchwork of fabrics. Courses, from short introductions to intensive eight-week tutoring on creating beautiful seating and curtaining, are also offered.

If you are going to do it yourself, JA Milton – 01691- 624023, www.jamiltonupholstery.co.uk – sells everything, from tools and padding to faux crocodile-skin coverings. For fringing, Samuel and Sons has just opened in London, offering good stock at reasonable prices and will deliver. The Button Queen – 020-7935 1505, www.thebuttonqueen. co.uk – in Marylebone is worth a look, too.
