How to Create a Fun 1970s Look.

Hair-Mar06-06-176Vintage hair styling requires several things; patience, nimble fingers and a few select styling products. In my line of work as a freelance vintage hair stylist, make-up artist and owner of Sarah's Doo-Wop Dos, I regularly create many different looks from different eras for my customers, so the tips I'm sharing in this article are thoroughly tried and tested!

The 70s saw big steps in women's liberation and companies started appealing to a new independent and fashion forward woman. Fashion was bold and fun, with TV stars like Farrah Fawett becoming huge style icons. Her long layered, flicked out hairstyle was much copied throughout the decade and became the decades most iconic style.


Step 1
Start by parting your hair in the middle and heat up your straighter or curling tong. Heated rollers and styling tools became very popular in the 70s as a way of quickly adding the much desired 'flicks' or 'wings' to the hair.

Step 2
You will only need to curl the front layer of the hair, so when it's done the flicks will softly frame your face. You will need to curl the hair in medium sized sections and curl backwards, away from your face. Then pin each curled section in place and let it set.

Step 3
Make sure both sides are curled backwards so they will look similar when styled. Long hair was very popular in the 70s, think Ali McGraw's long locks in the hit film 'Love Story' and the layered look, also know as 'The Shag' , was also in fashion. But don't worry if you don't have long or layered hair as this look works well on modern cuts too.

Step 4
Once the curls have cooled, un-pin them all.

Step 5
Tease the hair a little at the top of the head to create a little volume but not too much that the hair looks big, 70s hair was worn quite flat at the top with most of the volume at the bottom. For a tousled/beachy look you can just break up the curls a little with your fingers.

Step 6
To create a smooth finish bush the curls softly into place, if you don't have any layers in your hair try pinning a few strands back from your face to give the illusion of Farrah Fawett flicks.

Tip
As a final touch add a real healthy glow to your make-up with bronzer and blusher as the 'natural' beauty look was hugely popular in the 70s.
