Jif Lemon, a history
2. As foodies today embrace the retro revival as inspiration for their cooking, Jif Lemon remains a timeless classic. In 1957, Edward Hack first created the idea to place real lemon juice inside a yellow lemon-shaped plastic container, paving the way for food innovation in the fifties
3. Fast asserting its place as an everyday essential, Jif Lemon was originally available from chemists, grocers and fishmongers for one shilling each
4. Creating Jif Lemon was not an easy task! Hack searched high and low for the perfect lemon shape that would forever be reflected in the product design. In 1957, Hack examined the entire stock of Harrods, Fortnum & Mason, Selfridges, and finally Covent Garden market, where after sorting through 300 lemons, he discovered the iconic shape
5. From the fifties up to present day, Jif Lemon has become infamous as a last minute favourite and recognisable due to its 'don't forget' Pancake Day advertising
6. Demand for Jif Lemon hasn't faltered throughout the years, with 72,000 created every day in the months leading up to Pancake Day. In 2015, 2.4 million Jif Lemons were produced for Pancake Day alone!
With its rich and trusted heritage, Jif Lemon remains a retro favourite in kitchens today. Stock up for Pancake Day this year with Jif Squeezy Lemon (RRP £0.65) and Jif Lemon Juice Bottle (RRP £1.09) which are available at most major retailers.
