Knit your own bird (and eggs!)

From robins to ravens, these pretty peckers created by Nicky Fijalkowska are irresistible
This book began with an unusual request for a gigantic knitted seagull. Caroline, the owner of my local yarn shop, wanted a life-sized knitted herring gull to sit in her window. How could I say no? After that, I started knitting some of the inhabitants of my local Wetlands Trust Centre.

In my book, I have included many of my favourite birds, from familiar garden visitors like the robin to more elusive birds like the hoopoe and the kingfisher. Smaller knitted birds with posable feet can cling to bird feeders, the edges of flowerpots, or perch among your houseplants. You could also make little birds without wire legs and attach a loop of ribbon to their back to use as Christmastree ornaments – robins would look particularly festive.

All of the birds, eggs and nests are worked flat, on two needles. One of the biggest challenges was finding a way to create the aerodynamic curves of our feathered friends using only two needles. I hope you enjoy knitting a flock of your own as much as I enjoyed creating them.

Knitted Birds: Over 30 Fun Feathered Friends For You To Knit, by Nicky Fijalkowska, with photography by Paul Bricknell, is published by Search Press, priced £12.99.
