The Shard is arguably one of London's most iconic modern buildings. Standing at 95 storeys high in Southwark, The Shard boasts some of the most breath taking panoramic views of the city in a luxury setting. Stay a night at the five star Shangrai-La hotel situated in the lower floors, or dine from a selection of opulent restaurants in the upper floors including Aqua Shard, Oblix, Hutong, Lang, Ging and Gong, all diverse in cuisine.
On one of the hottest spring days in London, the Gourmet Girls were invited to Oblix for lunch (the urban, contemporary, casual restaurant located on the 32nd floor). Oblix have recently launched their 'Sunday Roast in the Sky' menu, serving British favourites with an elegant twist. Firstly, guests are invited to select from a sumptuous menu of protein: beef, duck chicken or lamb, and then choose two sides. Sides include beef-fat roasted potatoes or horseradish mash potatoes paired with creamed spinach and gruyere or honey roasted carrots, all accompanied by two Yorkshire puddings and smothered in gravy. The restaurant is famed for its signature josper oven, charcoal grill and rotisserie, producing some exceptionally cooked meats and vegetables, so my guest and I were more than thrilled to be reviewing the menu.
After deliberating the options over some warm olive sourdough bread and butter and a glass of prosecco, I opted for the beef with roast potatoes with the spinach and gruyere sides, paired with a fresh white wine. My guest opted for the duck with the same sides to accompany. The beef was perfectly seasoned and cooked to a medium tenderness. The red wine gravy complimented it fantastically and even had a touch of sweetness to it. The spinach was sautéed in garlic and mixed with gruyere which made for another nice salty to sweet flavour contrast, and the potatoes added a good bit of crunch to the mix. My guest and I truly couldn't fault our mains.
Although bursting at the seams, we couldn't leave without trying a dessert. My guest and I had been eying the sweet treats brought out by staff that had been passing us. We decided to move to a spare dining table overlooking the heart of London to finish our meal. The sky was spotless and blue that day that we dined, so we could well and truly appreciate the skyline. I ordered the indulgent chocolate brownie sundae complete with vanilla ice cream, caramelised nuts, caramel sauce and whipped cream while my guest had the New York cheesecake topped with fresh seasonal fruits, cream and a biscuit. Alongside another class of crisp white wine, the desserts were excellent and topped off a flawless dining experience at The Shard.
For those wanting to spend their Sunday in style, the Oblix Sunday Roast will be available on Sundays from 12pm – 2.45pm in the Restaurant only. Prices start from £32.
