Poldark

A hero returns, faced with a war much closer to home

The view is indeed magnificent but a precipitous cliff edge on the cornish coast would be far down the list for my favoured location for a gallop. But as Poldark (Sunday, BBC1,Ben-Felsenburg-colour-176 9pm) returns, that’s where the lovely Elizabeth Warleggan finds herself, carried along at breakneck speed by an out-of-control nag whose brakes are entirely failing to engage.

Only who should rock up with coal-black eyes peeking out from under a tricorne hat, just in the nick of time, to save not only Elizabeth, but also the unborn baby she carries, but the swarthy sex bomb himself. Aidan Turner’s Ross Poldark is back, smouldering with brooding manliness more than ever before, as the scene is set for a no-holds-barred conflict. And yes, though the year is 1794, the main war here is not with revolutionary Frenchies but between the Poldarks and the Warleggan clan.

The embroilment between Ross and Elizabeth may be a thing of the past, but her husband George is not a man to let bygones be bygones. Point of fact, vengeful Warleggans make warring Sicilian clans look positively amnesiacal by comparison, and even after Ross has saved the life of his wife and child, George is still unforgiving and dagger-eyed. Prepare for mano-a-mano macho stand-offs, hot embraces with heaving bosoms aplenty and a refreshing change of scene, as the action heads across the channel for a tale of two countries amid the sound of whooshing guillotines. It was the best of primetimes…
