In the heart of East London, situated in the M by Montcalm hotel, Tonic and Remedy offers an environment to meet friends and relax over comfort food and contemporary cocktails.

In conjunction with with Orchard Pig Cider, Tonic and Remedy have recently launched the Three Little Pigs experience, showcasing hand-selected Orchard Pig Ciders to create delightful cocktails with. To accompany this, Tonic and Remedy have paired the cocktails with an assortment of indulgent nibbles. At £25 per person, an Orchard Pig cider cocktail masterclass is also available where you can learn step by step how to mix the cider, spirits and other ingredients to re-create your favourite drinks.

The Gourmet Girls were invited to experience the masterclass and cider pairing first hand, arriving to the restaurant on a sunny early evening in Shoreditch. The hospitable manager and chef were eager to talk us through the evening's food and cocktail offerings. We started with the Truffling cocktail based on the dry and gentle Truffler cider. This was mixed with Beefeater gin, fennel, celery seeds, lemon juice and sugar. It was paired with gin-cured salmon, wrapped in shaved pickled fennel and topped with a blackberry. The flavours made for an interesting sweet and dry contrast, almost like a lemonade.

Next, we moved onto the most anticipated dish and cider pairing. The pulled pork croquet was nothing short moreish: it was marinated in cola, draped and fried in a béchamel sauce and held in place by an apple puree. This was accompanied by the Revelling cocktail, created with Evan's 7 Whiskey, Orchard Pig Reveller, lime juice and maple syrup. Although I'm not usually one for dark spirit, the combination of ingredients worked perfectly, it was easily the best whisky cocktail I had ever tried. It was suggested that we sip the cocktail at the same time as biting the croquette to enhance the flavours.

We finished the pairing with the Charming cocktail, mixing the Charmer Orchard Pig cider with three year aged Havana Club, beetroot, lemon juice and agave. This was to go with the indulgent beetroot and 70% chocolate gluten free brownie. The cocktails all came in rustic glass jars and a wooden crate, so you could sip what you liked, when you liked without misplacing drinks on a table. This would be especially practical for a large group seeking to try the masterclass. The Charmer was sweet but balanced with subtle savoury and fresh notes, really enjoyable and complimented the brownie well.

I tried my hand behind the bar making the Revelling cocktail, which was great fun. I don't think I'll be leaving The Lady anytime soon to pursue a master cocktail making career, but it was definitely a fabulous experience nonetheless!
