You shall go to the ball

As Cinderella – and her wicked stepfamily – return to the screen, it’s the magical costumes that steal the show
They’re every child’s worst nightmare, the wicked step-family from hell. And Cate Blanchett (as the evil stepmother) and Sophie McShera and Holliday Grainger (as the stepsisters) certainly look the dramatic part in Kenneth Branagh’s much-anticipated new film version of Cinderella.

Cinderella (played in this production by Lily James) has been around for a while. Her tale arguably dates as far back as the first century BC to the fictional Rhodopis, a Greek slave who rises above her station to wed the king of Egypt.

From the Brothers Grimm’s Aschenputtel and Charles Perrault’s Cendrillon to Disney’s 1950 animated Cinderella, her story has been told time and again. Never before, however, have the costumes – created by Sandy Powell – been quite this magnificent.

Which is why a stunning selection of them, along with over 100 props from the new film, are now on show at a free exhibition in London’s Leicester Square Gardens. ‘You can see the detail and the work and the colour and the wit and the whimsy that have gone into Sandy’s costumes,’ says star Cate Blanchett. ‘It’ll be a real treat for people.’
