TOP TIPS FOR CV SUCCESS

  • As a general rule keep it to two pages only
  •  Include a decent and professional looking headshot photo
  • Use a font that is easy to read and don’t crowd the page
  • It is standard to include your contact details at the top of the CV
  • You can begin with a ‘profile’ paragraph, which is a short synopsis of what you want and what you are capable of due to your experience and skills.
  • Make sure your profile is clear and the content is not word-for-word repeated in the rest of your CV
  • Make subheadings of each relevant role, the dates which you worked there including the address for each place of work, in order of the most recent first. Keep it simple accurate and relevant
  • List your education with the most recent first
  • Be honest, clear and positive – you don’t need to go as far back as your first newspaper round
  • Don’t look to a thesaurus to make every word sound more exotic but do use a spellcheck
  • Have an up to date CV, not just a cover letter
  • Photos must be professional head and shoulders, no sunglasses, no beachwear, no holiday snaps
  • Check the job spec. If you’re a single person don’t apply for a couple job and don’t apply for a job that you have absolutely no experience in doing
  • Cover letters – check spellings, grammar and punctuation and keep it to one page
