British Cyclist wins the Tour de France
Chris Froome has won the 100th edition of the Tour de France. The British cyclist crossed the finish line arm-in-arm with Team Sky, winning the race by 4 minutes and 20 seconds. Last year’s winner, Bradley Wiggins, was unable to join Team Sky following an injury. However, Team Sky’s general manager, Sir Dave Brailsford, says he hopes the two will be in the same team next year, and that it would be “a joy to watch”.
Tropical outfits granted at the Royal household
It seems not even Buckingham Palace is immune to feeling the heat of the recent temperatures. Livery staff, including the Royal Guards, who traditionally wear heavy red tunics and bearskin hats, have been granted permission to wear ‘tropical’ alternatives. The Queen herself described her servants as looking like “ice-cream salesmen” in the outfits, but nevertheless granted permission given the hot weather.
Couple separated during WWII finally marry 70 years later
Teenage sweethearts Bob Humphries (89), and Bernie Bluett (87) finally reunited and married after being separated during World War II. Bernie’s parents hid love letters from the smitten teenager, one of which included a marriage proposal. 70 years on, both letter and couple were reunited, resulting in an immediate wedding. Mr Humphries said, “Back in the forties, we were very much in love. It’s the kind of love you never forget.”
Indian man claiming to be 141 could be the oldest man in the world
Feroz-un-Din Mir, from Kashmir, claims to have a government certificate stating that he was born on March 10th, 1872, which would make him 141 years old. The current record-holder for the age of a living person is Misao Okawa, who is 115. Mir’s wife Misra, says she has told him many stories, “He is witness to some of the most significant events in history in the past century,” she stated.
