Meditation can improve memory and emotional control
Scientists at Harvard University have found that just eight weeks of simply meditation techniques can build denser grey matter in parts of the brain; such structural changes are linked to learning, memory and the ability to control emotion. In the study, volunteers undertook an MRI scan before and after completing an eight-week Mindfulness course; the results were compared to scans of those who did not take part in such meditation. Mindfulness is an acceptance approach that encourages the participant to be aware of their thoughts and then focus their awareness on the breath and other physical sensations.
Smoking in cars containing children to be banned from October 2015
Following a vote by MPs earlier this year, a law is expected to pass in December that will ban smoking in cars with children from October 2015. The ban reflects health fears over passive smoking and the need to protect young people. A survey by the Department of Health found that 300,000 children visit their GPs in England each year with respiratory symptoms related to second-hand smoke. Those who fail to prevent smoking in the vehicle face point's on their license and fines ranging from £60-£10,000 depending on the case.

8,000 volunteers start to clear Tower of London poppies
Today sees thousands of volunteers start to dismantle the river of ceramic poppies at the Tower of London. The 888,246 poppies, with the first one planted in July, each represents a death of a British and Commonwealth Soldier during the First World War. Labelled as "Blood-Swept Lands and Seas of Red", it is speculated that over 5 million people have visited the artwork by Paul Cummins. Thousands of poppies will eventually be on display in Imperial War Museums in both London and Manchester.
