Candidate question:
‘My employer is very nice but I am finding that I am doing so much more than I thought, cooking, cleaning up, sometimes ironing as well as taking care of the baby. I don’t know how to say this to my employer as we get on really well and on the most part have a good relationship!’
The Lady says...
Talk to your employer. We are all keen to please and try our best and sometimes employers might see this as your ability rather than you stretching yourself to far. If you are a Nanny your main role is to care for the children and that must come first. Provide suggestions to your employer to solve this workload problem for example hiring a part-cleaner or cooking meals that are simple and do not take so long to prepare.
Candidate question:
‘I really adore the children but sometimes it feels like I’m always at work as I live-in with the family and the children come to me with requests and little problems even when their parents are home. I don’t want to be rude but sometimes I need some space.'
The Lady says...
Discuss with the parents how you feel and ask them to support you in telling the children not to disturb you out of hours. It is not an easy situation because the children do not always understand the workplace environment for a Nanny.
Candidate question:
‘I worry that the children are not disciplined enough as they can run riot at home and mum and dad are a bit lenient at putting them to bed so the little ones are always tired and grouchy. How should I deal with this without causing offence or coming across as if I am telling them how to bring up their own children?’
The Lady says...
Discuss with the parents that you think an earlier and more structured bedtime is important for the children’s overall development and that they need to support you in any changes being made to their routine.
