FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Glynis Barber

is an actress, best known for her roles in Dempsey And Makepeace and EastEnders to name but a few. She lives with husband Michael Brandon in London.
What are you working on at the moment?
Stalking The Bogeyman – it’s a riveting new play by Markus Potter and journalist David Holthouse. It is based on a true story and follows Holthouse as he plans revenge on his childhood abuser. I play his mother who only finds out what happened 25 years later.

When are you at your happiest?
On a beach by the sea in the hot sun. Add a cocktail and I’m even happier!

What is your greatest fear?
Forgetting my lines on stage. I actually have a recurring nightmare about preparing to go on stage and not being able to find my script and realising I haven’t looked over the words in months.

What is your earliest memory?
Potty training – and mistakenly trying to pee like a boy. Don’t judge me!

What do you most dislike about yourself?
My impatience.

Who has been your greatest influence?
Mary Poppins.

What is your most treasured possession?
Sadly, my iPhone.

What trait do you most deplore in others?
Lack of humour.

What do you most dislike about your appearance?
I’ve given up that kind of thinking.

What is your favourite book?
A Story Like The Wind by Laurens van der Post.

What is your favourite film?
Snakes On A Plane – on account of it being the best title ever in the history of the world. A second close is Franco Zefferelli’s Romeo And Juliet. It was my first Shakespearean encounter and I fell in love with both Romeo and Juliet.

First-Impressions-22Jul-02-590Barber likes best: Prince’s Purple Rain, fish and chips, Snakes On A Plane and reading Laurens van der Post

What is your favourite piece of music?
Purple Rain by Prince.

And your favourite meal?
Fish and chips.

Who would you most like to come to dinner?
Ricky Gervais.

What is the nastiest thing anyone has ever said to you?
I can’t remember so I have obviously blocked it out.

Do you believe in aliens?
Not actively but I am open to the possibility of their existence. However, if they do exist, the chances of them having arms and legs, I would say, is remote. They’d probably be more like a plant.

What is your secret vice?
Drinking copious amounts of rosé. Is that even a vice?

Do you write thank-you notes?
Not at much as I should.

Which phrase do you most overuse?
I use the words ‘basically’ and ‘literally’ way too much.

What single thing would improve the quality of your life?
More time.

Can you tell us one thing people might not know about you?
I was born and raised in South Africa.

What would you like your epitaph to read?
At that point, I don’t really care.
