Research reveals the rise of the Domestic Gods
Move over domestic goddesses. UK males are claiming to be more house proud than females, with 74 per cent of men insisting they keep a tidy house, compared to 72 per cent of women.
According to research revealed today by Anglian Home Improvements, 15 percent of men describe themselves as "competitive" when it comes to having a tidy house compared to nine per cent of women.
But according to the data, it still falls to the lady of the house to do the majority of the work, with women spending around seven hours per week cleaning compared to men who claim to do five hours.
Melanie McDonald, head of PR and internal communications for Anglian Home Improvements, which commissioned the study of 1,000 UK adults, said: "This research confirms we are seeing the rise of the domestic god. UK men have mounted a serious challenge to age-old gender stereotypes and have now overtaken women when it comes to the pride they take in making their house a home.
"I'm sure women across the UK will welcome the opportunity to relinquish their domestic goddess crowns to the men in their lives; and to share the sense of satisfaction and contentment that comes from spending time and effort creating a warm, welcoming home."
According to the survey, men are bigger spenders on home improvements. The average UK male has spent £7,692 over the last five years; while women have spent an average of £6,485 – around 16 per cent less.
And when it comes to home furnishings, men are also prepared to spend approximately 24 per cent more than women to update their interiors – an average of £513 a year, compared to £390.
The research revealed the lengths house proud Brits go to impressive guests. Men are more likely than women to polish the door knocker, wash the wheelie bin and make sure children are out of the house; while UK females are more likely than men to light a scented candle, put out new towels and hide 'stuff' in the garage or shed.
And the chaps have confessed to getting more annoyed than the lady of the house when guests drop-by and create a mess, with 13% of men even admitting to telling their visitors off for untidying their orderly home.
Melanie continued: "The results of this survey have proven to be truly enlightening – an insight into the psyche of the UK male and how he feels about his home. It has also confirmed that we are indeed a house proud nation, with almost three quarters of UK adults taking pride and pleasure in their homes."
