REVIEW: Park Plaza Sherlock Holmes

When I think of Baker Street I think of murder, mystery and of course Sherlock Holmes- elementary my dear reader. But after my visit to Park Plaza Sherlock Holmes boutique hotel and restaurant, I now also think of great cuisine.

As part of this year's London Food Festival which runs from 1-15 October, the chefs at Park Plaza Sherlock Holmes' award-winning restaurant, The Grill, have created a limited edition three-course menu for the incredibly reasonable price of £20.

The menu focuses on healthy grilled dishes which are fresh, contemporary and uses organic, locally-sourced ingredients.

The first disappointment of my evening was that I couldn't order one of everything from the menu!

For starters, after deliberating for a full 10 minutes over the choice of courgette and thyme soup, apple and Somerset goat cheese with autumn vegetable salad or oak smoked salmon with soft cheese, toasted brioche, my guest and I both eventually decided to go with the soup.

Served with the most beautifuly fluffy, fresh, thick cut bread with salty butter the soup was incredibly tasty. Before I even tasted it, the smell of it was a clear sign that it would be delicious- and it really was. Incredibly light this soup could quiet happily sit on a summer menu, but with the thick bread it is also the perfect a complement to any autumn evening out.

For the main, once again my guest and I went for the same dish of Gloucestershire free-range corn-fed chicken breast with field mushroom in a wild garlic sauce. Anything with mushrooms will always be high on my list of dinning delights and happily this dish did not disappoint. The chicken was cooked to perfection, practically falling off of the bone and the mushrooms were full of flavour. My only comment is that although the dish was by no means dry but I would have liked more of the garlic sauce.

The desert selection is where I feel the menu was let down slightly. There is nothing wrong with apple tart tatin, vanilla crème brulée or a selection of ice creams and sorbets but there was nothing that made me think "wow". I opted for the selection of sorbets; mango, lemon and raspberry and my guest had the crème brulée. They were both very nice but not overly exciting.  I think the selection of deserts was very much a safe choice.

The incredibly helpful, friendly staff and the lovely atmosphere added to the enjoyment of the evening. At £20 the menu on offer is a great deal and I would certainly recommend the Park Plaza Sherlock Holmes to anyone.
