Lulu's lovelies

She's a style icon making her jewellery designing debut. Katy Pearson finds out what makes Lulu sparkle
Lulu, it must be said, is not the most shy and retiring of ladies. When we meet at the launch of her first ever jewellery collection she is positively brimming over with enthusiasm.

'Try it on, try it on,' she urges. Before I know it, I have two necklaces and a pair of earrings dressing up my outfit.

Classic Rock is set to be the first of many new collections from the LKC (Lulu Kennedy Cairns) brand. Inspired by her timeless approach to fashion it is infused with an element of rock ‘n roll chic.

But why jewellery I ask?

'Designers are not designing for women in their fifties and sixties,' explains Lulu.

'They have to keep it simple – that’s the way to make fashion successful. But women ask me how I choose, what I think...

'Rock and roll is big and hard for a lot of women to carry off, unless you’re in the music business. I like a classic look with a bit of an edge to it; so that’s what this is.

'I wear it, and I think that encourages people. And it’s affordable – when I design, I design so it’s affordable.'

What one thing do you think a woman should have jewellery-wise, as a fail-safe, I question?.

'There’s never a one thing – never a one favourite record, song, food – there’s always a selection,' says Lulu.

'I personally like to wear things on top of things. And I like the combination of black and white - it’s a very easy wearable combination.

'I think for older women, if you’re going to wear a little black dress and you want a bit of zing, you just put a big ring on and some bracelets.

And if you could give any tip on jewellery-wearing, what would it be?

'I definitely think that if you want to update a look you should layer. It makes it so much more now.'

And if anyone knows how to stay current, it's the timelessly chic Lulu...
