Home Help: 7 June
Art should never be bought with an eye to making money – that’s a bonus. It should be a purchase of love. But don’t buy blind. Get an idea of prices by looking out for work at local galleries and art fairs.
Don’t purchase art to coordinate with your room scheme. It should create interest in the room and not just blend into the background, but neither should it overpower. It should be able to adapt to any interior-design scheme.
This is the first year of London Art Week, which will be showing less-expensive antique drawings, as well as Old Master oils. And Crispian Riley-Smith is showing 19th century botanical drawings. As well as being attractive and versatile enough to fit into both modern and traditional interiors, good botanical art holds its value.
It’s a good idea to view pictures at exhibitions – such as the Affordable Art Fair 13-16 June 2013 showing new works – rather than on a website. When choosing prints, always buy numbered, limited editions, either with the artist’s signature or stamped by the printer. This applies to photographs too, which are well represented at this fair. A fine landscape in oil or photograph will give an extra dimension to a room.
This month, art schools will be holding their degree shows, which are open to the public. Check each school’s website for details and dates. Some of the work will come highly recommended by the Principal – you could well get a bargain from a future successful artist, just by choosing something that stands out for its originality.
