Lynda Bellingham Dies at 66
Lynda Bellingham died peacefully in her husbands arms last night at a London hospital, after losing her battle with colon cancer. Bellingham was a Canadian born actress, broadcaster and author, moving to London as a child where she was adopted.
She is perhaps most well known for her role as the mother in the OXO adverts, however she is also known through her role in All Creatures Great and Smalll, as well as being one of the panelists in the chat show Loose Women.
In her recent autobiography she wrote that she wished to stop having chemotherapy in November, for the sake of her family, and that she would like to have one more Christmas. She made the decision to stop having chemotherapy after the cancer spread to her lungs and liver.
She was appointed OBE in the 2014 New Year Honours for voluntary service to charitable giving. Her final appearance on Loose Women was recorded on the 8th October and is due to be aired this Wednesday.
Tutankhamun not what he seemed...
The 11th pharaoh of the 18th dynasty of Ancient Egypt, Tutankhamun as we know him, ruled 1332 BC – 1323 BC.
The ruler's golden burial mask projects an image of power and beauty, however a 'virtual autopsy' has shown that he had girlish hips, a club foot and buck teeth, not exactly the majestic being that he was once thought of! Amidst the jewels and gold that can be found in the ancient king's tomb, there is a staggering 130 used walking sticks, which gives further evidence to the idea that he had a club foot.
This has also put to rest the idea that he died chariot racing, as his club foot would have meant that he was unable to compete. The reason for Tutankhamun's previously hidden imperfections could be the fact that his parents were brother and sister, and given that the Ancient Egyptians were not aware of the consequences of inbreeding, it is highly likely that this also contributes to his early death in his teens.
Paris bans smoking in playgrounds
In France there are some 16million smokers, with around 70,000 smoking related deaths a year. Smoking is already banned in all inside public places in France, including cafes, restaurants, stations and museums. A new initiative is that it is now going to be banned within one of the city's parks as part of a year long trial period.
The experiment is part of an attempt to reduce the number of smoking related deaths within France and an attempt in 'teaching people about cigarette addiction', said the city's Socialist mayor. There will be a system of formal warnings and fines introduced for those who choose to breech the rules, however the main aim not to punish, but to inform.
Boris Johnson does not share this view, and said that it was 'bossy and nannying' and that he wanteed to keep London a city that 'people can do what they want with their lives' in; we can assume that the Mayor of London will not be following suit any time soon!
Hedgehog Hotel
Yes this really is a thing! The Hedge Hotel is the culmination of a life long dream for an animal lover Fiona Finlayson, who has set up the hotel in her home in Burnley. Owners can receive updates and can be sent photographs of their pets during their stay.
Fiona describes the hedgehogs as'very loving, cuddly and quite happy to snuggle up', so they aren't the prickly creatues that everyone thinks of them as! The 22-year-old started up the business after studying animal management at Myerscough College, although her original fascination with hedgehogs came from her Childhood love of Beatrix Potter's Mrs Tiggy-Winkle.
After receiving a loan and advie from the Prince's Trust, Fiona is welcoming more furry friends to her hotel than ever.
Dame Judi Dench reveals how she keeps her mind active
The Oscar-winning actress, who is to turn 80 in December, reveals that she learns a new word or poem every day to keep her mind active. This follows after a survey that the actress took part in alongside Sir Tony Robinson and Slade frontman Noddy Holder for the poll of more than 2,000 people over 65 in which they were asked for their 'bucket list' of things they wanted to do/acheive before they die.
Whilst Holder revealed that he wanted to travel the world in a yacht and Robinson (renowned for his role as Baldrick in Blackadder) announced that he wished to become a world famous gambler, dame Judy said that although she didn't have a bucket list, she did try and keep her mind active.
Buying a house, going to university and falling in love were also on the list of things over-65s said they still wanted to do before they die.
