FIRST IMPRESSIONS: ROY HUDD

…is an English comedian, actor, writer, broadcaster and authority on the history of music hall entertainment. He lives in Suffolk with his wife Debbie, two cats and four chickens.
What are you working on at the moment?
For the first time in my career I am playing the dame, ‘Sarah the Cook’, on stage at Wilton’s Music Hall in the pantomime Dick Whittington And His Cat, for all of December.

When were you at your happiest?
When I was evacuated to a little village called Maidford in Northamptonshire during the war. We’ve finally moved back to the country and I’m happy again.

What is your greatest fear?
Not ever being asked to perform again.

What is your earliest memory?
I can’t remember! Maybe being held up by my Auntie Snowie to look out of my bedroom window at a red glow that covered the sky, and my aunt saying ‘This is something you’ll never forget.’ It was Crystal Palace burning down. I was six months old.

What do you dislike about yourself?
Putting off till tomorrow what I could do today.

Who has been your greatest influence?
My gran, Alice Mary Barham. She brought me up, took me to the Variety theatre, and was the best judge of a comedian I’ve ever known.

What is your most treasured possession?
Max Miller’s guitar.

What trait do you most deplore in others?
Air kissing. Mwah! Mwah!

What do you most dislike about your appearance?
The area between the top of my head and my big toe.

What is your favourite book?
Puckoon by Spike Milligan.

Chas and Dave.

What is the nastiest thing anyone has ever said to you?
A BBC spokesman told me I should be more like Jonathan Ross.

Do you believe in aliens?
Yes, the last one I met said the above.

What is your secret vice?
Cheese, cheese and more cheese.

Do you write thank-you notes?
Always.

Which phrase do you most overuse?
‘Well, I think...’

What single thing would improve the quality of your life?
Being younger.

Can you tell us one thing people might not know about you.
I am passionate about early civilisations.

What would you like your epitaph to read?
Died 2036.
