Skincare 101: Eye cream
Many people question why you should pay out for an expensive eye cream when you have a perfectly good moisturiser already. Moisturisers are often far too heavy for the delicate skin around the eyes and can cause puffiness and irritation. Eye creams are usually formulated with special ingredients which target concerns such as dehydration and bags.
Some key ingredients to look out for are vitamin A (also known as retinol) which encourages collagen production and the turnover of cells. Vitamin C helps to improve the skin's elasticity which helps to reduce signs of ageing; vitamin E is soothing and protects the skin. Antioxidants will help fight the negative effects of free radicals when skin is exposed to ultraviolet light and pollution. SPF is also extremely important although this can be hard to find in products specifically aimed at the eye area as it can cause irritation- wearing sunglasses in bright sunlight is a great way to combat the negative effects of the sun.
Of course, although they go a long way to help, the very best things that you can do for your eyes and your skin, in general, have nothing to do with expensive creams. Nothing can replace a good night's sleep, a healthy diet and drinking plenty of water. Take a look at my top eye cream recommendations below to suit every budget.
