Skincare 101: Eye cream

The skin around our eyes is one of the first places that we start start to show age so it is no wonder that many people are concerned with how to care for this delicate area, says Amy Cosgrove
The bad news is that no eye cream, no matter how much it costs, is going to rid you of wrinkles and severe dark circles. The circles are often genetic (so blame your parents!) and the wrinkles are something that will catch up with all of us. The good news is that although they are not miracle workers- it is absolutely worth investing in a good quality eye cream. Keeping the area hydrated can help to reduce the signs of ageing, puffiness and generally firm up the skin.

Many people question why you should pay out for an expensive eye cream when you have a perfectly good moisturiser already. Moisturisers are often far too heavy for the delicate skin around the eyes and can cause puffiness and irritation. Eye creams are usually formulated with special ingredients which target concerns such as dehydration and bags.

Some key ingredients to look out for are vitamin A (also known as retinol) which encourages collagen production and the turnover of cells. Vitamin C helps to improve the skin's elasticity which helps to reduce signs of ageing; vitamin E is soothing and protects the skin. Antioxidants will help fight the negative effects of free radicals when skin is exposed to ultraviolet light and pollution. SPF is also extremely important although this can be hard to find in products specifically aimed at the eye area as it can cause irritation- wearing sunglasses in bright sunlight is a great way to combat the negative effects of the sun.

Of course, although they go a long way to help, the very best things that you can do for your eyes and your skin, in general, have nothing to do with expensive creams. Nothing can replace a good night's sleep, a healthy diet and drinking plenty of water. Take a look at my top eye cream recommendations below to suit every budget.
