Marilyn Monroe is the epitome of vintage glamour; with her red lips and platinum blonde hair, nipped in waist and wiggle dresses (where the hem is narrower than the hips making you wiggle when you walk) – so much so that we have featured her in the latest issue of the magazine. But what would Marilyn be wearing if she was alive today? We asked Clare Quartermaine from The House of Foxy for her thoughts.
“I firmly believe that Marilyn would be as iconic if alive today as she was then. Her style seemed effortlessly feminine; she dressed perfectly for her body shape, not hiding any gorgeous curves, instead choosing to highlight them. We feel that women should continue to do this today; working with your body, showing off your best bits, and embracing the sophisticated designs of the past.”
Here is what Clare believes Marilyn would choose from their latest collection.
Daywear
“Marilyn loved a pencil skirt, high-waisted with a narrow hemline to really accentuate her shape. I would team our Perfect Pencil Skirt in black, with the aptly named Norma Jean blouse in ivory and finish the look with our limited edition cropped red wool jacket. The way the jacket pulls in the waist emphasises the narrowest part of the body creating shape that is so very Marilyn. In fact, she wore a similar outfit as Miss Dixie O’Dare in the 1953 film Niagra.”
“Another great day wear outfit that she would wear, maybe if she worked in an office or was going somewhere smart, is the Jackie O Suit. It is a two piece, with a wiggle dress and matching cropped jacket, that nips in under the bust based on early 1960s designs.”
Eveningwear
“Marilyn was known for her party frocks (who can forget the fuchsia pink dress she wore while singing Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend?) so we would love to dress her up in some of ours. It would have to be a choice between the Sandy dress with its contrast collar, fit and flare shape and full skirt so she could dance the night away.”
“Or she may we’d choose the Connie; also a fit and flare dress but this time with ¾ length batwing sleeves. The 6 button and loop fastenings at the neckline was a popular detail of the 1950s, which Marilyn would have loved!”
“However I think Marilyn would choose a design that oozed in glamour such as the Gina dress; a perfect cocktail dress with its lace and ribbon detail and of course a tight wiggle skirt. The boned bodice will hold you in the right places and the lace overlay gives a demure yet sexy look. So very Marilyn!”
“To complete any look, I’d dress her in our 1950s Couture Coat, in a dark green Italian wool blend. It has 12 panel pieces that give it its stunning shape that again flatters the waist.”
“Finally, she would create the perfect pout with Fatale Cosmetic’s Monroe Red lipstick; she’d adore the gold packaging!”
